Merkusha was very active, friendly, care-free and confident--a true clown at Zabava, he keept everyone smiling, as well as grinned quite a bit himself. Merkusha was one of the smartest dogs we've owned.. Merkusha had gorgeous angles all around, great front assembly, long stallion neck, long straight tail, small high-set ears, and dark eyes. He was a very functional, balanced and structurally sound hound with great speed and agility at a gallop and effortless light-footed movement at a trot. Merkusha started his show career at the BCNC Specialty following the National Show, where he won the 9-12 Sweepstakes class under the respected breeder-judge Edd Abblett (Aristoff Borzoi). Edd told us that Merkusha was going to grow into a "magnificent Borzoi". Merkusha has proven him right and has gotten many compliments from other breeders and judges present at that National and every specialty he has attended since. The list of Merkusha's accomplishments is long indeed: Best Opposite at the National in 2005, 3 BISS wins, 4 SBOS wins, 4 Specialty AOMs, 2 TSE BOB wins, 3 TSE AOMs. In 2008, Merkusha was the #1 Breeder-Owner-Handled Borzoi in the United States, #2 Borzoi (Breed System), #5 Borzoi (All-Breed System) with very limited showing. Merkusha's pedigree includes English, Russian, American and Canadian greats. He has sired five litters, two for us at Zabava (See our F Litter and T Litter pages), one for Bunny Kelley of Kelcorov Borzoi in Northern California, a gorgeous litter of two for Islehaven Borzoi on Lopez Island, WA that included a Best Puppy at the 2010 National (See Islehaven Litter), and, most recently a litter for Aashtoria Borzoi in Yakima, WA (See Aashtoria Litter). Merkusha died two weeks after a tragic collision in the yard. Sleep well and play hard up there, our beautiful angel. We miss you and your bouncing, grinning, running between our legs, watching TV and your twinkle in the eye. Merkusha, was truly a once-in-a lifetime dog...
